Orlando Real Estate

History of Orlando

By 1840, Fort Gatlin was built to protect settlers at the height of the Seminole Wars. The Jernigan family established the first permanent settlement in 1840. In 1856, the community officially changed its name from Jernigan to Orlando, where in 1875 it was incorporated into the Town of Orlando and became a city in 1885.
Downtown Orlando is built on land formerly owned by cattle king Jacob Summerlin. The Francis Epps family also contributed significantly to the growth and quality of life in the City of Orlando.
This bustling hub as Florida’s citrus industry evolved into an international tourist destination during the 20th century. Far from its citrus roots, 21st century Orlando’s diverse economy now offers cutting edge, high-tech careers in fields like simulation and training, digital media, life sciences and modeling, tourism and hospitality industries.
